Clay pipes were by far the most common type used in Britain in the eighteenth century. Their price was within the reach of most people. The larger pipes have bowls made of meerschaum, a type of soft stone that is easily carved.The original idea for this pipe is thought to have been based on the Biblical character of Jona and the Whale although I think the creature on the stem looks more like a sea serpent with scales and teeth which a whale would not have. It might even be that they were first produced because of tales of early colonists in the Florida swamps who were confronted with crocodiles.If you should happen to find yourself face to face with such a creature while re-enacting using one of my Mariner clay pipes do send me a picture! This pipe is Approx 7 inches long and can be smoked. Surface fettled and hand burnished to a high standard.
